Julius Posener

German architect (1904-1996)

The architectural history of the twentieth century finds a primary observer in Julius Posener, whose life spanned the rise of modernism and the displacement of the Third Reich. Born in 1904 within the villa colony of Groß-Lichterfelde, his perspective on the built environment was shaped by early exposure to progressive design in his parents' English country home.

Architectural Education and Early Practice

Between 1923 and 1929, Posener engaged in formal architectural training. His education included instruction under Hans Poelzig. Following this period, he joined the office of Erich Mendelsohn in Berlin. These professional foundations occurred during a volatile era for German design, setting a trajectory that led him temporarily to Paris before his departure from the country in 1935.

Exile and Global Teaching

The Nazi power struggle of 1933 necessitated his migration to Paris and subsequent move to Palestine in 1935. During his period of exile, he served in the British Army and gained naturalization in 1946. After the war, his academic career expanded internationally, including teaching roles in London and Kuala Lumpur starting in 1956. He eventually returned to Germany to lead building history studies at the Berlin University of the Arts, where he remained until 1971.

Contribution to Architectural History

Posener authored extensive literature focused on functionalism, the Deutscher Werkbund, and the evolution of Berlin architecture. His published output includes works like 1964's Anfänge des Funktionalismus and his 1977 study on Berlin's architectural development between 1889 and 1918. He served as a mentor for the publication ARCH+ and acted as chairman of the Deutscher Werkbund from 1973 to 1976. His life and experiences were documented in his 1990 autobiography, Fast so alt wie das Jahrhundert.

Professional Recognition

His career as an academic and historian garnered institutional support and critical acclaim. He received the Berliner Kunstpreis in 1977, the Ernst Reuter Medal in 1988, and the Heinrich Mann Prize in 1996. These honors reflect his influence on the study of modernism and his role in chronicling the shift of building practices throughout the century.
