Early Development and Ekhymosis
Growing up in Medellín, Juanes began his musical education on the piano at age two and later learned the guitar from his father and brothers. Exposed to traditional vallenato, tango, and Russian folk music, he later adopted the influence of international rock acts like Metallica and The Beatles. In 1988, he founded Ekhymosis, a rock band that released eight albums, including Niño Gigante, but struggled to break out of the local Colombian market. In 2000, Juanes released his debut solo album, Fíjate Bien, produced by Gustavo Santaolalla. While it found immediate success in Colombia, his global reach expanded significantly with his 2002 follow-up, Un Día Normal. The record featured the single "A Dios le Pido," which topped charts in twelve countries. His 2004 release, Mi Sangre, cemented his international status with the hit "La Camisa Negra," which became a worldwide bestseller despite controversies regarding its reception in Italy.
Humanitarian Engagement and Later Works
Beyond his musical contributions, Juanes established the NGO Fundacion Mi Sangre to provide aid to Colombian victims of anti-personnel mines. His career has continued with multiple studio releases, including La Vida... Es Un Ratico, Loco de Amor, and Vida Cotidiana. He has documented his life through the 2013 autobiography Chasing The Sun. His work continues to be recognized globally, with recent accolades including the 2023 Latin Grammy Award for Best Pop/Rock Album.
