Jørn Lyseggen

Norwegian businessman

A 15,000-dollar initial investment served as the foundation for Meltwater, a media monitoring firm that eventually scaled to over 430 million dollars in annual revenue. Founded by Jørn Lyseggen, this business grew from a modest Oslo startup into a global entity employing more than 2,300 people across 50 cities.

Academic Background and Early Ventures

Born in 1968 in Seoul, Lyseggen was adopted by parents in Norway. He earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Bergen University College before completing a Master's degree at Iowa State University, where he specialized in signal processing and artificial intelligence. He began his professional career as a research scientist at the Norwegian Computing Center. He pivoted to entrepreneurship in 1995 by establishing an internet consultancy that served various Norwegian media organizations, including Nettavisen. This firm was acquired by EUnet International in 1997. Subsequently, he became the CEO of Mogul AS, steering the organization through a successful IPO in 2000.

Expansion of Meltwater

In 2001, Lyseggen launched Magenta News in Oslo to provide real-time online media monitoring. The company was bootstrapped without venture capital, later rebranding to Meltwater News and relocating its headquarters to San Francisco. By 2020, he transitioned to the role of Executive Chairman, appointing John Box as CEO. That same year, the company completed a public listing on the Euronext Growth Oslo. Under his leadership, the business evolved to provide social media analytics and competitive intelligence, eventually serving more than 27,000 global clients.

Philanthropy and Mentorship in Africa

Lyseggen established the Meltwater Foundation in 2008, which launched the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) in Accra, Ghana. The institution operates as an incubator and seed fund for African technology entrepreneurs, training students in leadership, business, and software development. Supported by a 2-million-dollar annual donation from Meltwater, MEST has seen its alumni join international accelerators. In 2021, Digest Africa recognized Lyseggen as the fifth most influential person in the African startup ecosystem for his contributions to the market.

Data Analytics and Community Building

In 2017, he published Outside Insight: Navigating a World Drowning in Data, a text examining the utility of external data in executive decision-making. He argued that information regarding competitors and customers serves as a vital indicator for future financial performance. Continuing his involvement in the tech sector, he founded SHACK15 in 2019, an entrepreneurial hub located in San Francisco’s Ferry Building designed to support emerging businesses.
