Joseph Wright of Derby: Painting the Enlightenment by Candlelight

A travelling lecturer has put a white cockatoo in a glass vessel and is pumping the air out of it. The only light in the room comes from a single candle, shining through a jar containing a human skull. One girl watches, transfixed; her elder sister covers her eyes and cannot look. A young couple pay attention only to each other. An old man sits contemplating the skull. Joseph Wright painted this in 1768, at a moment when serious British painting was supposed to be about scripture, antiquity and the faces of the rich.

Derby, and Why It Mattered

Wright was born in Derby in 1734 and died there in 1797, and the place is not incidental. Derby in the mid-eighteenth century was one of the great centres of the birth of the Industrial Revolution, and it had an intellectual culture to match: scientific lectures and public demonstrations were a popular form of entertainment, staged in the Town Hall for paying audiences. Wright became a friend of the town's leading scientific minds and moved among the key figures of the English Enlightenment. He also painted the industrialists and intellectuals of the Midlands, which meant that the subject matter arriving in his studio was, uniquely for a British painter of the period, the future.

Hudson's Pupil

He trained in London during the 1750s under Thomas Hudson, a prominent portraitist, and portraiture was the trade he learned and practised. Nothing in that apprenticeship predicts what followed. What Wright acquired instead — the thing that would define him — was an obsession with artificial light, drawn from the Dutch followers of Caravaggio, whose night scenes he studied and then pushed considerably further. Britannica's assessment is unambiguous: he was the finest European painter of artificial light effects of his era.

The Orrery and the Air Pump

Between roughly 1763 and 1773 Wright produced the group of pictures on which his reputation rests, all lit by candle or moon. *A Philosopher Giving that Lecture on an Orrery* (1766) — Derby Museums calls it his masterpiece — shows a mechanical model of the solar system demonstrated to an audience of ordinary people, with a lamp standing in for the sun. *The Alchymist in Search of the Philosopher's Stone* took the older, occult version of the same impulse.

*An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump* (1768) is the most ambitious of them. The technical achievement is the light itself: the National Gallery notes that the lecturer's showy red damask robe reads as "salmon pink in the candlelight, but darkening to magenta as the eye travels further from the light" — a graded observation of how one source falls across a single fabric, sustained across an entire canvas of flesh, glass, brass and cloth.

But the picture is not a demonstration of skill. It is a modern vanitas, in the Gallery's reading: a reminder of the passing of time, the limits of human knowledge and the frailty of life itself. Wright gives the scene the full apparatus of history painting — scale, dramatic chiaroscuro, moral weight — and then hands it to a provincial parlour where a bird is being suffocated for the instruction of children. The spread of reactions is the argument: curiosity, revulsion, indifference, mortality. He is not celebrating the Enlightenment. He is asking what it costs.

Italy, and a Volcano He Never Saw Erupt

Wright travelled in Italy from 1773 to 1775, sketching in gouache in 1774 and going to Naples and the bay, possibly guided on his climbs by Sir William Hamilton, the diplomat and vulcanologist. Vesuvius supplied him with a second lifelong subject: he is thought to have painted it more than thirty times.

The complication is that Vesuvius was not erupting while he was there. Analysis has shown he took liberties with the topography too, arranging compositions to include features not actually visible from the vantage points he depicts — and a Tate canvas, found to use sulfur for its bright yellows over a gypsum ground, may have been painted in Italy itself. The eruptions, in other words, were constructed. What he had seen was a mountain; what he sold, repeatedly, was a spectacle assembled in the studio out of observation, hearsay and the same command of light he had learned on candles.

Why Joseph Is Called a Genius

Two claims are usually bundled together here, and they are worth separating, because one is about craft and one is not.

The first is technical, and it is the one the sources actually support. Wright was, in Britannica's judgement, the best painter of artificial light in Europe in his lifetime. That skill is specific and describable: modelling how a single point source behaves as it travels — how a red damask goes salmon at close range and magenta at distance, how light passes through glass and a skull and comes out changed, how a face reads when lit only from below. It is optical observation of an unusually disciplined kind, held steady across large compositions, and it is a physical and perceptual accomplishment rather than an intellectual one. It should be described as such.

The second claim is conceptual, and it is stronger. Wright noticed that a scientific demonstration in a private house was a fit subject for serious painting, at a time when the academic hierarchy reserved that seriousness for scripture and antiquity. Applying history painting's full machinery to an orrery, an air pump and a cotton mill was a genuinely original judgement about what mattered — and, in the air pump picture, he was clear-eyed enough to make the new knowledge ambiguous rather than triumphant. That is why the painting still works two and a half centuries later.

The counter-case is worth stating flatly. Nobody quoted here calls Wright a genius: the National Gallery says he was innovating within British art, and Derby Museums, which owns more of him than anyone, calls him one of Britain's "most interesting and wide-ranging" painters — measured, careful praise. His indisputably great period is about a decade long. He spent most of his working life as a portraitist in a provincial town. And the Vesuvius pictures, more than thirty of them, are a commercially repeated formula built around an eruption he never witnessed, with the geography rearranged to improve the view. That is the behaviour of an extremely capable professional painter meeting a market, not of a restless originator. The honest verdict is that Wright had one very large idea, executed it with technical command that nobody in Europe could match, and then made a living.

Legacy

Wright is now what he was not quite in his lifetime: the painter of the Industrial Revolution, the man who established that furnaces, forges, machines and experiments were legitimate material for ambitious art. His work hangs in major galleries worldwide, and Derby Museums holds the largest collection of it anywhere — begun in 1882, now approaching 600 items, designated by Arts Council England as a collection of outstanding national significance. *An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump* has become the standard image of the Enlightenment itself, reproduced in every history of the period, which is a peculiar fate for a painting whose actual subject is a room full of people who cannot agree whether what they are watching is wonderful or appalling.
