Joseph Aoun secured the presidency of Lebanon in January 2025, receiving 99 out of 128 votes in the second round of an electoral session. His election concluded a two-year political impasse, marking his transition from the top military leadership position in the country to the head of the Lebanese state.
Early Development and Training
Born in 1964 in the Sin el Fil suburb, Aoun stems from a Maronite Christian family originating from Al-Aaishiyah. His education includes studies at the Lebanese American University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science and international affairs. He also graduated from the Lebanese Army Military Academy with a degree in military science. His foundational military training took place during the Lebanese civil war, following his recruitment into the armed forces in 1983.

Aoun's career progressed through significant field operations. In 1990, he served within the Commando Regiment and assumed command after the death of his unit leader, Bassam Gergi. By 2015, he commanded the 9th Infantry Brigade, which held positions along the border with Israel. He underwent advanced counter-terrorism training in the United States in 2008 and further training in Lebanon in 2013.
Leadership of the Armed Forces
In March 2017, Aoun was appointed commander-in-chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces, succeeding Jean Kahwaji. He later directed the operation known as Fajr al-Joroud in August 2017 against extremist groups in the Ras Baalbeck and al-Qaa regions. Following the success of this military action, he maintained leadership through the 2024 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. His term as commander was extended twice by parliament before his move into the presidency.
The 2025 Presidency
Upon his inauguration in 2025, Aoun committed to addressing systemic issues including corruption, poverty, and sectarianism. He outlined a platform focused on judicial reform and the restoration of state monopolies on the use of arms. His eligibility faced scrutiny from opposition members citing article 49 of the constitution, which traditionally restricts active military commanders from seeking the presidency, though this provision has been set aside previously.
