Competing in eight Summer Olympics, Josefa Idem secured five medals over a career that spanned more than three decades. Born in 1964 in Goch, Germany, she initially represented her home country before obtaining Italian citizenship in 1992. Her athletic journey transformed her into a prominent figure in international canoe sprinting, eventually leading to a brief tenure in national politics.
Early Athletic Career
Idem began paddling at age eleven. By 1977, at thirteen, she appeared at the European Championships in Plovdiv, earning three gold medals and a bronze. She represented West Germany at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where she won a bronze medal in the K-2 500 metres alongside Barbara Schüttpelz. In 1988, she moved to Italy, where she transitioned to the K-1 event and began training with Guglielmo Guerrini.

After marrying Guerrini in 1990 and becoming an Italian citizen, Idem competed for her adopted country starting in 1992. Her performance peaked between 1997 and 2002, during which she claimed three World Championship titles and five European titles. She reached the pinnacle of her sport at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, winning the gold medal in the K-1 500 metre event.
Longevity and Final Competitions
Idem maintained a high level of performance well into her forties. Following the birth of her second child in 2003, she won silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics. At the 2008 Beijing Games, she secured another silver in the K-1 500 metres, finishing just four-thousandths of a second behind the winner. Her eighth and final Olympic appearance occurred at the 2012 London Games, where she placed fifth.
Parliamentary Service and Resignation
In 2013, Idem transitioned to political office, winning a seat in the Senate of the Italian Republic for the Democratic Party. Under the cabinet of Enrico Letta, she served as Minister for Sport, Minister for Youth Policies, and Minister for Equal Opportunities. Her ministerial tenure ended on 24 June 2013, when she resigned following a judicial investigation into allegations of unpaid taxes.
