Business Development and Acquisitions
Born in 1912 in Würzburg, Josef Neckermann established Neckermann AG in 1938. His early business operations were marked by the hostile takeover of existing Jewish-owned retail firms. Following the conclusion of global hostilities, Neckermann faced legal consequences for these actions, resulting in a one-year sentence served in a military prison. Despite this, he managed to rebuild his commercial influence and by 1957 he reached a settlement with Karl Amson Joel, providing two million West German marks in compensation for the seized business.

Beyond his corporate endeavors, Neckermann was an accomplished athlete and dressage rider. He participated in international competition across four different intervals between 1960 and 1972, securing medals in the field of dressage. His involvement in the sport extended to administrative roles, where he served as a member of the West German National Olympic Committee. His legacy in the discipline was continued by his daughter, Eva Maria Pracht, and his granddaughter, Martina Pracht, who also competed as equestrians.
Distinctions and Final Years
Throughout his later life, Neckermann received numerous accolades from the German state, including the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1968, followed by the Commander's Cross in 1974, the Knight Commander's Cross in 1982, and the Great Cross with Star and Sash in 1987. In 1990, he was awarded the Hessian Order of Merit. Neckermann, who was a member of the Strassburger KDStV Badenia zu Frankfurt am Main, died in 1992 in Dreieich and is buried at the Frankfurt Main Cemetery. In 2006, he was posthumously inducted into Germany's Sports Hall of Fame.
