Kupper secured the Swiss Chess Championship three times, specifically in 1954, 1957, and 1962. His performance at the 11th Chess Olympiad in Amsterdam in 1954 earned him an individual silver medal. Later, at the 1959 Zürich International Chess Tournament, he finished in ninth place, achieving the highest rank among all Swiss participants. Between 1953 and 1973, he competed twelve times in the Clare Benedict Chess Cup, collecting team medals including gold in 1958, silver in 1969, and bronze in 1953 and 1960. Individually, he won five gold medals in that same competition across various years.

As a primary representative for Switzerland, Kupper appeared at the first board in the 1954 Amsterdam, 1958 Munich, and 1964 Tel Aviv Chess Olympiads, recording a strong performance in Israel with eight wins, six draws, and one loss. During the 1968 Lugano Olympiad, he moved to the second board. His team commitments extended to the European Team Chess Championship preliminaries, where he played on the second, fifth, and sixth boards in 1961, 1973, and 1977 respectively.
Academic and Professional Career
Beyond his activity on the chessboard, Kupper pursued a career as a mathematician. He received his education at ETH Zurich, an institution where he later held an academic teaching position. His professional trajectory also included employment at Swiss Life. His work reflected the mid-century trend of specialization within the field of mathematics, with his career spanning from his birth in 1932 until his passing in Zurich at age 85.
