The demolition of an under-construction McDonald's franchise in Millau in 1999 transformed José Bové from a regional sheep farmer into a global symbol of anti-capitalist resistance. A lifelong agitator for environmental and agricultural causes, Bové utilized civil disobedience to challenge corporate power, eventually transitioning from the protest field to the chambers of the European Parliament in Brussels and Strasbourg.
Early Formative Years
Born in Talence in 1953, Bové spent his formative years in various locations, including a period in Berkeley, California, where his parents worked as researchers. His formal education included the St Charles school in Athis-Mons and studies at Bordeaux Montaigne University. During his university years, he associated with anarchist and pacifist groups. When faced with mandatory military service, he registered as a conscientious objector, eventually going into hiding and working as a shepherd in the mountains to avoid conscription.

Take the IQ test →Agricultural Activism and Larzac
Bové first achieved prominence in 1976 during the Fight for the Larzac, a campaign opposing the expansion of a military facility on the Larzac plateau. He joined farmers occupying the land to prevent the displacement of local sheep herders and the alteration of the regional ecology. Following the government's decision to cancel the project, Bové remained on the plateau, working as a shepherd and producer of Roquefort cheese. In 1987, he co-founded the Confédération Paysanne, a union dedicated to promoting organic farming and protecting the livelihoods of small-scale farmers against industrial agro-business.
Legislative and Political Career
Bové expanded his influence by running as a candidate in the 2007 French presidential election. His political focus shifted toward international governance through the European Parliament, where he served as a member from 2009 until 2019. Throughout his career, he has been involved with various organizations, including the anti-globalization group ATTAC and Via Campesina. His activities have frequently led to legal conflicts, including multiple prison sentences for the destruction of genetically modified crops and the dismantling of corporate property.
