Medical Foundation and Early Comedy
Born in London in 1934, Miller pursued natural sciences and medicine at St John's College, Cambridge. He qualified as a physician in 1959 and spent two years working as a hospital house officer. Following his exit from the stage show in 1962, Miller transitioned into television and theatre direction. He edited the BBC arts programme Monitor and directed works such as Alice in Wonderland in 1966 and an adaptation of M. R. James's ghost story in 1968. He also served as an associate director at the National Theatre between 1973 and 1975.
Scientific Communication and Opera
Miller integrated his medical background into his professional work, most notably through the BBC series The Body in Question in 1978. His operatic career included productions for Kent Opera, Glyndebourne, and the English National Opera, where he directed Rigoletto and The Marriage of Figaro. In 1984, he engaged in advanced study of neuropsychology at McMaster University.
Recognition and Later Years
His contributions to the arts were formally acknowledged through several honors, including the Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1983 and a Knight Bachelor in 2002. He served as a fellow at multiple prestigious medical institutions, including the Royal College of Physicians. Miller died in London in 2019.
