Jonas Petter Renkse, born in 1975 in Hägersten, established his career as a Swedish musician primarily through his foundational role in the band Katatonia. Since the group’s formation in 1991, he has operated as a songwriter, vocalist, and drummer, eventually transitioning his primary focus toward clean singing and songwriting duties within the metal and rock scenes.
Band Affiliations and Transitions
Renkse participated in various musical collectives throughout his career. While Katatonia remains his longest-running commitment, he helped establish the band October Tide in 1995 following a temporary halt in Katatonia’s operations. He served as a founding member, guitarist, drummer, and vocalist for that project. Additionally, he was a member of Bloodbath from 1998 until 2023, where he contributed as a bassist, songwriter, and founder. In 2013, he also began a collaboration as a co-vocalist in Wisdom of Crowds alongside Bruce Soord.

During the early 1990s, Renkse handled both drumming and lead vocal duties. By 1996, the physical strain of performing death metal vocals led to a shift in his technique; he committed to clean singing exclusively by 1997. He abandoned his role as a drummer in 1998 to concentrate entirely on vocal delivery. Throughout his career, he has utilized specific equipment, including a Shure Beta 87a microphone and a TC-Helicon Voicelive2 processor for his live and studio performances.
Collaborative Projects and Guest Appearances
Outside of his primary bands, Renkse has contributed to numerous external projects. He provided guest vocals for Ayreon, starting with the 2008 release 01011001 and continuing into the 2024 live project. He also recorded vocal parts for The Ocean Collective on their albums Phanerozoic I: Paleozoic in 2018 and Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic & Cenozoic in 2020. His production credits include the 2002 Opeth track Still Day Beneath the Sun, and he has maintained a long-standing personal and professional connection with Opeth singer Mikael Åkerfeldt.
