Early Background and Education
Born in 1958 in Damongo, Mahama belongs to the Gonja ethnic group. His formal education included attendance at the Achimota School and Ghana Senior High School. He later earned a degree from the University of Ghana and eventually achieved a Doctor of Sciences. His academic background encompasses history and communication studies, providing a foundation for his early professional work in civil service.

Before his rise to executive power, Mahama worked with Plan International and held various positions in the public sector. He served as the Minister for Communications between 1998 and 2001. His legislative career included serving as a member of the 4th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana from 2005 to 2009. He also served in the Pan-African Parliament, representing his country in regional legislative matters.
Executive Leadership
Mahama served as the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana from 2009 to 2012. He ascended to the presidency in 2012 following the death of the incumbent. During his time in office, he chaired ECOWAS from 2013 to 2015. Despite a defeat in the 2016 election, he remained an active political figure until his successful campaign for the presidency in 2024.
