John Phillip Lipsky assumed the role of acting managing director of the International Monetary Fund in May 2011, following the arrest of Dominique Strauss-Kahn. This transition placed him at the center of the European sovereign debt crisis, where he managed critical negotiations regarding financial bailouts for Greece during the 37th G8 summit held in Deauville, France.
Early Education and Career Beginnings
Born in 1947 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, John Lipsky graduated from Washington High School before pursuing higher education at Wesleyan University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics. He subsequently obtained both his master's degree and doctorate in economics from Stanford University. Upon completion of his graduate studies, he began his professional career at the International Monetary Fund.

During his initial tenure at the IMF, Lipsky managed exchange rate surveillance procedures. In 1978, he served as the organization's resident representative in Chile. He returned to the Washington D.C. headquarters in 1980 to analyze international capital markets. In 2006, he returned to the institution as First Deputy Managing Director, a position he held until his retirement in November 2011.
Private Sector Banking Roles
Lipsky transitioned to the private sector in 1984 by joining Salomon Brothers in New York. While based in London starting in 1989, he led the bank's European Economic and Market Analysis Group. By 1994, he returned to New York to serve as the firm's chief economist. Later, he joined JPMorgan, serving as its chief economist, director of research, and eventually as vice chairman of the JPMorgan Investment Bank.
Academic and Advisory Contributions
Following his departure from the IMF, Lipsky transitioned into academia and advisory roles. He is currently a distinguished visiting scholar at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. His professional service includes board memberships with the National Bureau of Economic Research, the American Council on Germany, the Japan Society, and the Council on Foreign Relations. He also joined the board of HSBC.
