Early Life and Education
Born in 1940 in Chesterfield, John Hurt was the son of a Church of England clergyman. He attended St Michael's Preparatory School in Otford before moving to Lincoln Christ's Hospital School. Initially encouraged to pursue art, he studied at the Grimsby Art School and later at Saint Martin's School of Art in London. He eventually pivoted to acting, securing a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he trained for two years.

Hurt's initial film appearance occurred in the 1962 drama The Wild and the Willing. He gained significant professional traction with his role as Richard Rich in the 1966 film A Man for All Seasons. By 1975, he achieved further recognition for his performance in the television production The Naked Civil Servant, which earned him a British Academy Television Award for Best Actor. This period also saw him portray the Roman emperor Caligula in the 1976 BBC series I, Claudius.
International Recognition and Awards
The 1978 film Midnight Express marked a major turning point, earning Hurt a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor. He followed this with an Academy Award nomination for his lead role in the 1980 film The Elephant Man. Throughout his career, he appeared in diverse works including Alien, Nineteen Eighty-Four, and the Harry Potter series. In 2014, he was appointed a Knight Bachelor for his services to drama.
