Early Career and Brokerage
Born in Eidsvoll, Norway, on 11 May 1944, the future business magnate grew up in the Vålerenga district of Oslo. He began his shipping career in 1961 as a messenger at the shipbroker firm Blehr & Tenvig. By 1966, he held a position as a tank broker at A.O. Andersen, later advancing to chief at Wallem & Co. in Singapore in 1968. Returning to Oslo in 1969, he gained a reputation for rapid decision-making while working at Anco Tanker Service.

In 1971, he established Northern Tankers Inc. in Liberia, followed by Ocean Tanker Co. Inc. in 1974. During the 1970s, he secured long-term tanker charter contracts that yielded US$40 million when prices rebounded after the Yom Kippur War. In 1978, he emigrated from Norway to London, continuing his operations through Lancaster Maritime Ltd. By 1981, he initiated his own shipowning career, focusing on high-risk transport routes during the Iran–Iraq War to exploit elevated freight rates.
Frontline and Market Dominance
In 1996, his company Hemen Holding Limited acquired a majority stake in Frontline AB, a Swedish shipping firm that was subsequently re-domiciled to Bermuda. Following the 2008 financial crisis, he navigated severe market downturns by splitting his flagship firm in 2011. He moved key assets and US$666 million in debt into Frontline 2012 Ltd., which later merged back with the original entity in 2015. He currently maintains a 36% stake in Frontline.
