John David Washington

A single season at Morehouse College saw John David Washington record 1,198 rushing yards, establishing a school record that defined his collegiate athletic peak. Before transitioning to a career in cinema, the Toluca Lake native navigated the professional football circuit as a running back, eventually moving from the gridiron to international film sets as a leading actor.

Athletic Career

Washington excelled at Campbell Hall School in basketball, track, and football before enrolling at Morehouse College. During his final year, he set single-game and career rushing records for the institution. In 2006, he joined the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent, later playing for the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe. He eventually competed for the Sacramento Mountain Lions in the United Football League until the league ceased operations in 2012.

Transition to Screen

Though he held an uncredited role as a student in the 1992 film Malcolm X, Washington began his professional acting career in 2015 as Ricky Jerret on the HBO series Ballers. This role spanned five seasons until 2019. In 2018, he achieved widespread recognition for his portrayal of detective Ron Stallworth in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, which earned him nominations from the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild organizations.

Film and Theater Development

Following his success in BlacKkKlansman, Washington secured lead roles in several high-profile productions, including the 2020 thriller Tenet, directed by Christopher Nolan, and the 2023 science fiction film The Creator. His stage work includes a 2022 Broadway revival of August Wilson's The Piano Lesson. He reprised this performance in a 2024 film adaptation directed by Malcolm Washington. In 2025, he became the face of the Tom Ford fragrance Bois Pacifique.
