John Cryan

John Michael Cryan took the helm of Deutsche Bank AG in July 2015, navigating the institution through a period of restructuring. His tenure as chief executive spanned three years, ending in April 2018 when Christian Sewing succeeded him. Before this high-profile appointment, he built an extensive career in international finance, holding positions in London, Singapore, and Frankfurt am Main.

Early Education and Professional Beginnings

Born in Sunderland on 16 December 1960, John Cryan attended the University of Cambridge. He began his professional path at Arthur Andersen before transitioning to the banking sector. In 1987, he joined S.G. Warburg in London, establishing his footing within the competitive landscape of investment banking.

Positions at UBS and Temasek

Cryan joined UBS AG in September 2008 as group chief financial officer. During his time there, he led the bank's financial institutions group and provided guidance to the board of directors regarding the global financial crisis. After departing UBS in 2011, he moved to Singaporean investment company Temasek in January 2012, serving as president for Europe.

Leadership at Deutsche Bank

In June 2015, Cryan was named co-chief executive officer of Deutsche Bank, sharing the role with Jürgen Fitschen. By May 2016, he transitioned to the sole CEO position. He remained in this capacity until April 2018, when he exited the firm.

Directorships and Later Career

Beyond his executive roles, Cryan has served in non-executive capacities. In January 2015, he joined the board of Man Group. Following his departure from Deutsche Bank, he became a director at X Cyber Group LTD in the UK in April 2019. By September of that same year, he was slated to replace Ian Livingston as chairman of Man Group.
