Academic Foundation and Early Career
Born in Kampen in 1818 to a predikant family, van Vloten relocated to Leiden in 1835. He pursued university studies covering theology, literature, and linguistics. Following his graduation, he served as a teacher of history and French at a Rotterdam gymnasium starting in 1862. His professional trajectory eventually shifted toward higher education when he accepted a professorship for Dutch language and literature at the Deventer atheneum in 1854.

In 1865, van Vloten expanded his teaching duties to Groningen while maintaining his Deventer post. However, his outspoken anti-religious stance resulted in his dismissal from the atheneum in 1867. Settling in Bloemendal near Haarlem, he continued his work without a permanent income. Throughout this period, he engaged with prominent progressive figures, including Multatuli and Everhardus Johannes Potgieter. Between 1865 and 1881, he also served as the editor of the journal De Levensbode.
Literary and Historical Contributions
Van Vloten is recognized for his role in reintroducing the work of Baruch Spinoza to a wider audience, authoring a biography on the subject in 1852. His historical scholarship included works such as the three-volume Nederlands opstand tegen Spanje, published between 1858 and 1871, as well as Leidens belegering en ontzet and Middelburgs beleg en overgang. His broader writing encompassed Dutch aesthetics and studies on literary figures like Elisabeth Wolff and the brothers Willem and Onno Zwier van Haren.
