Johann Strauss II

Austrian composer (1825-1899)

Johann Strauss II made a career in music at a time when the terms of that career were still being set.

The record lists Johann Strauss II as Austrian composer (1825-1899).

Johann Strauss II was born at Neubau in 1825. His recorded nationality is the Austrian Empire.

The nineteenth century professionalised nearly everything: salaried posts, formal training, and audiences large enough to sustain a career.

He worked as conductor and composer.

Among his principal works are The Gypsy Baron, Die Fledermaus and The Blue Danube. Music outlives its context more reliably than any other art, and usually for reasons its makers did not predict.

His recorded fields of work are music composing, opera and classical music.

Recognition followed: Knight's Cross of the Order of Franz Joseph (1871), Knight of the Legion of Honour (1877), Knight of the Order of the Lion and the Sun and Knight of the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky.

Working from the Austrian Empire shaped what was possible - the audiences within reach, the institutions that would have him, the language the work first appeared in.

Johann Strauss II died in 1899, aged 74. What survives is the work, which is the only durable form of a reputation.
