The Galerie Belvedere appointed Johann Peter Krafft as its Director in 1828, a position he maintained for nearly three decades until his death. Born in 1780 in Hanau, then part of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel, he moved through the educational structures of the Austrian Empire to become a central figure in the nineteenth-century Viennese art scene.
Early Education and Travels
By the age of ten, Krafft attended a drawing school. In 1799, he relocated to Vienna to live with an aunt and enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts. Under the tutelage of Heinrich Friedrich Füger, he focused on history painting. His training extended beyond Austria in 1802 when he traveled to Paris alongside Veit Hanns Schnorr von Carolsfeld. This period proved formative, as he established connections with Jacques-Louis David and François Gérard, whose influence shaped his subsequent artistic style.

Krafft returned to Vienna in 1805 to work as a portrait painter. He gained formal recognition by becoming a member of the Academy in 1813 and was named a Professor there in 1823. The couple had children who followed in his profession, including Marie, Albrecht, and Julie. His brother, Joseph Krafft, was also active as a painter specializing in portrait miniatures.
Museum Directorship and Heritage
As Director of the Galerie Belvedere starting in 1828, Krafft exercised significant influence over institutional collections. He travelled extensively to Munich, Dresden, and Venice, acquiring 80 works for the museum. Beyond his curatorial duties, he served as an expert on monument preservation, contributing to projects at Schönbrunn Palace, Karlstein Castle, and the Jesuit Church. He attained the status of Academic Counselor in 1835. He died in 1856 and was interred at the Vienna Central Cemetery.
