Early Development and Swiss Debut
Born in Santa Marta, Colombia, on 1 February 1986, Vonlanthen relocated to Switzerland, obtaining citizenship through his Swiss-born stepfather. He entered the professional ranks with BSC Young Boys, where he participated in the Swiss Super League during the 2001–02 season at the age of 16. By the summer of 2003, his performances earned him a transfer to the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, where he initially contributed to the team's qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

Vonlanthen debuted for the Switzerland national team on 6 June 2004, replacing Alexander Frei in a 1–0 victory over Liechtenstein. His record-breaking performance at UEFA Euro 2004 in Portugal briefly held the status of youngest scorer in tournament history, surpassing Wayne Rooney. Though sidelined by a hamstring injury for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, he represented Switzerland at UEFA Euro 2008 and was a frequent contributor to the under-21 squad.
European and Colombian Club Tenures
Following his spell at PSV, Vonlanthen experienced various loan periods, including time at Brescia Calcio and NAC Breda. In 2006, he joined Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga, staying until 2011, excluding a loan period at FC Zürich starting in July 2009. He later played for the Colombian side Itagüí before pursuing opportunities back in the Swiss leagues, including stints at Grasshoppers, FC Schaffhausen, and FC Wil.
Retirement and Transitions
Vonlanthen first announced his retirement from active football in May 2012 at age 26, citing an aversion to necessary knee surgery. He resumed his career in May 2013, signing with Grasshoppers. His final professional chapter concluded in August 2018 after completing two years with FC Wil. Beyond his work as a player, he is a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
