Joao Alberto Grimaldo Ubidia represents a generation of Peruvian wingers transitioned into European leagues. Early Development and Academy Years
Grimaldo began his organized football journey in 2009 by playing in a futsal team in Rímac. After competing in tournaments like the Toque y Gol Cup with the Colegio San Andrés squad, he joined the youth structure at Esther Grande de Bentín. By 2016, he transitioned to the reserve squad of Sporting Cristal. During this formative period, his development was supported by a dedicated staff consisting of doctors, psychologists, and tutors, which assisted him in balancing his academic responsibilities with professional athletic growth. Grimaldo solidified his position in the Sporting Cristal starting lineup during the 2021 season. Throughout his tenure with the club, he contributed to successes in domestic competitions, such as the victory in the 2021 Bicentennial Cup. His statistical output increased notably during the 2022 League 1 season, where he improved his scoring average to 0.38. Despite facing challenges, including an injury against Foot Ball Club Melgar in a semifinal match, he remained a consistent offensive presence for the club until his move abroad.
International and European Transition
Following his exit from Sporting Cristal, Grimaldo gained experience in various international settings. His career path included stints at FK Partizan between 2024 and 2026, and Riga FC in 2025. On 10 January 2026, he secured a contract with the Czech club Sparta Prague. Simultaneously, he integrated into the Peru national football team, beginning in 2023, where he has recorded international appearances and goals.
