Early Career and Academic Foundations
Born in Sueca in 1922, Fuster pursued legal studies at the University of Valencia, graduating in 1947. His early intellectual contributions began in journalism, co-directing the magazine Verb alongside José Albi between 1946 and 1956. While his initial literary output consisted of poetry, such as the 1954 collection Escrit per al silenci, he soon transitioned into a prolific career as an essayist and critic.

Fuster’s analytical style gained prominence with the 1955 release of El descrèdit de la Realitat. Throughout the 1960s, he produced essential texts on history and cultural identity, including Qüestió de Noms and El País Valenciano. These writings, rooted in the traditions of humanism and skepticism, were noted for their precision. He later expanded his academic influence, eventually serving as a professor of literature at the University of Valencia and receiving honorary doctorates from the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Political Target and Legacy
His outspoken support for Catalan cultural unity invited significant opposition. On 11 September 1981, an explosion at his home in Sueca damaged his private library and archives. Despite this, he remained active in public life, serving as president of the Associació d'Escriptors en Llengua Catalana from 1987 to 1991 and Acció Cultural del País Valencià from 1978 until his death in 1992. He is buried in the cemetery of his hometown.
