Jiří Kroha

Czech architect, designer, painter, sculptor and university educator (1893–1974)

The Secondary Industrial School in Mladá Boleslav remains a primary example of Jiří Kroha's contribution to the inter-war architectural landscape, currently designated as a national cultural monument. Operating as an architect, sculptor, and pedagogue, he navigated the shifting political currents of twentieth-century Czechoslovakia while maintaining a prolific output in urban design, education, and theatrical production.

Professional Foundations and Education

Born in 1893, Kroha began his formal training at the Czech Technical University in Prague, where his professors included Jan Koula, Josef Fanta, Antonín Balšánek, and Rudolf Kříženecký. He completed his degree in 1918. During this period, he engaged with the cabaret culture of Prague, interacting with literary figures including Franz Kafka and Jaroslav Hašek. He also established ties with the Mánes Union of Fine Arts and the Artěl studio.

Academic Career and Political Activism

In 1926, Kroha started lecturing at the Brno University of Technology, eventually moving his family to the city in 1928. He became a full professor in 1930. His commitment to the Left Front and the Society for Cultural and Economic Convergence with Soviet Russia influenced his public life. He chaired the Committee for the Support of Families of Striking Miners in the Rosice–Oslavany region between 1932 and 1933. These political affiliations led to his forced retirement in 1935, though he resumed teaching in 1937.

War and Post-War Leadership

Following the Nazi invasion, Kroha faced arrest by the Gestapo due to his Communist involvement. He remained under surveillance throughout the Second World War. Post-liberation, he returned to academic leadership, serving as dean of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the Brno University of Technology from 1945 to 1948, and subsequently as the institution's rector. He directed the Master Studio of the National Artist until its closure in 1956.
