Tandy gained significant acclaim in 1948 by originating the role of Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway, earning her first Tony Award. While her film roles were initially sporadic, she appeared in notable productions like The Seventh Cross and A Woman's Vengeance. Her television presence grew during the 1950s, particularly through programs like The Marriage, which she developed with her second husband, Hume Cronyn.
Later Accomplishments
The 1980s marked a resurgence in her professional life. She earned additional Tony Awards for The Gin Game and Foxfire, frequently collaborating with Cronyn on both stage and screen. Her performance in the 1989 film Driving Miss Daisy secured her an Academy Award at age 80. She continued acting until her final role in Nobody's Fool, dying in 1994 at her home in Easton, Connecticut.
