Jerzy Szacki was a Warsaw-born sociologist whose intellectual career spanned the turbulent shifts of Polish politics and academia. Initially working at a train wagon factory after his university department was closed, he returned to reach the highest rank of ordinary professor at the University of Warsaw, leaving an enduring legacy in the history of social thought.
Academic Trajectory and Institutional Roles
Szacki began his sociology studies at the University of Warsaw in 1948. Following a disruption in the discipline during 1952, he returned in 1956 to complete his doctoral thesis under the guidance of Bronisław Baczko. He served as the Dean of the Department of Philosophy and Sociology from 1981 to 1983 and directed the Institute for the History of Social Thought for over three decades. Beyond his home institution, he engaged in research at the Collège de France and the University of Oxford.

His primary work, "History of Sociological Thought," gained significant traction as a staple textbook for Polish students and teachers. Published in 1979, the updated 2002 edition earned him the Prize of the Foundation for Polish Science. Beyond original research, he translated classic texts by Émile Durkheim, Marcel Mauss, and Jean-Pierre Vernant. His 1994 publication, "Liberalism after communism," critically examined the democratic challenges facing post-communist societies.
Wartime Actions and Recognition
During the Nazi occupation, Szacki and his mother, Barbara Szacka, hid a pregnant woman named Irena Hollender, who had escaped the Warsaw Ghetto. Providing shelter to Jews in that environment was a capital offense. For these actions, Szacki was honored as Righteous Among the Nations in 2004. He received further state recognition in 2008 as a Commander with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
