Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1963 to footballer Guy Papin, he spent his youth in Germont. His professional journey began at age 15 with Valenciennes. The most productive years of his career occurred at Olympique de Marseille between 1986 and 1992. He secured four consecutive Ligue 1 titles from 1989 to 1992 and the Coupe de France in 1989. During this tenure, he reigned as the league's top scorer for five straight seasons, totaling 181 goals across 279 matches. His domestic consistency earned him the 1991 Ballon d'Or.
European Campaigns and Milan
In 1992, he moved to AC Milan for a record transfer fee. Though hindered by injuries and the era's restrictive foreign-player quotas, he contributed to a Serie A title in 1994 and secured a UEFA Champions League victory.
