After his initial medical training, Askenasy completed postgraduate studies at the Romanian Circle of Neuropathology. In 1969, he earned a Doctor of Science degree from the C. I. Parhon University located in Bucharest. He served in clinical and academic roles within Romania, including the position of chairman of the Department of Neurology at Băneasa University Hospital in Bucharest.

Askenasy moved to Israel in 1972, where he secured positions at both the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and Tel Aviv University. His research trajectory expanded during this period, with a tenure at the Weizmann Institute of Science between 1974 and 1975. By 1985, he assumed the directorship of the Sleep Medicine Center at Sheba Medical Center.
Academic Appointments and International Work
His academic reach extended beyond Israel when he was appointed associate professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1981. He later took on the role of professeur agrégé at the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris in 1986. At Tel Aviv University, he served as a clinical professor of neurology at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine and later lectured in forensic science at the Buchmann Faculty of Law.
