The French industrialist Jean-Dominique Senard became the first chief executive officer of the Michelin tire company who held no familial ties to the founding owners. Born in 1953 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, he has navigated the highest levels of corporate leadership, moving from financial management roles at major industrial conglomerates to commanding pivotal positions in the global automobile sector.
Early Education and Career Beginnings
Senard attended the Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC) in Paris, where he earned an MA in law. His professional trajectory began in 1979 at Total S.A., where he remained until 1987. He subsequently transitioned to the treasury management division at Saint-Gobain in 1987, eventually serving as director of cash and financing by 1991. In 1996, he moved to the aluminium firm Pechiney as chief financial officer and executive committee member. When Alcan acquired Pechiney in 2003, Senard assumed the role of chairman.

In March 2005, Senard joined Michelin as chief financial officer and a member of the executive council. Following the death of Édouard Michelin in 2006, he was appointed managing partner in May 2007. By 2012, he succeeded Michel Rollier as chief executive officer. Under his leadership, the company reported a 43 percent increase in net income for 2016, reaching 1.7 billion euros. His governance approach prioritized social dialogue and industrial competitiveness during a period of economic globalization.
Transitions to Renault and the Alliance
Following the resignation of Carlos Ghosn, the Renault Board of Directors elected Senard as chairman on 24 January 2019. Simultaneously, he took on the role of president for the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance. Throughout his career, he has served on various boards, including Saint-Gobain and Groupe SEB, and maintains membership in the Institut Montaigne and the European Round Table of Industrialists. He is a recognized supporter of Emmanuel Macron.
