Jean-Claude Biver

Swiss businessman

Jean-Claude Biver spent forty-three years in the watch industry, navigating the transition from traditional mechanical manufacturing to the modern era of luxury marketing. His professional trajectory spans leadership roles at major entities including Omega, Hublot, and TAG Heuer, alongside his own eponymous manufacture, defining a career characterized by aggressive brand rejuvenation and strategic shifts in product positioning.

Early Career and Industry Entry

Born in 1949 in Luxembourg City to Jacques and Denise Biver, he moved to Switzerland at age ten. Following his studies at the University of Lausanne, where he earned a business degree, he entered the Vallée de Joux watchmaking circuit. Blancpain and Omega Turnarounds

In 1981, he and Jacques Piguet acquired the dormant Blancpain brand, rebuilding it on the premise that it would never produce a quartz movement. The venture achieved a turnover of CHF 50 million before its 1992 sale to the SMH Group for CHF 60 million. Subsequently joining the Swatch Group board, he led a major turnaround at Omega through celebrity sponsorships—including Cindy Crawford and Michael Schumacher—and product placement in James Bond films, nearly tripling sales over ten years.

Hublot and LVMH Leadership

He joined Hublot as CEO in 2004, driving a fivefold increase in sales by 2007 by emphasizing exclusivity and scarcity. Following LVMH's 2008 acquisition of Hublot, he took over the conglomerate's watch and jewelry division in 2014, overseeing brands such as Zenith and TAG Heuer. During his tenure at TAG Heuer, which began in late 2014, he shifted the company's motorsport partnership from McLaren to Red Bull Racing. He retired from his LVMH division presidency in 2018.

The JC Biver Manufacture and Alpine Cheese

In 2022, he launched his own independent luxury watch manufacture, JC Biver, based in Givrins, Switzerland, in partnership with his son Pierre Biver. Outside of horology, he maintains a farm in the Swiss Alps where he produces approximately five tonnes of cheese annually. He declines payment for this product, distributing it exclusively to family, friends, and selected restaurants to maintain control over its distribution.
