Jean Beausejour

Chilean association football player

Jean Beausejour achieved a distinct milestone in association football history by becoming the only Chilean player to score goals in two consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments. His professional career spanned clubs across Switzerland, Brazil, Belgium, Mexico, and England, culminating in major domestic trophy wins during his tenure with Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic in the English league system.

Early Career and Domestic Development

Born in Santiago and raised in the Estación Central commune, Beausejour began his football trajectory in the youth system of Universidad Católica after an earlier trial with Universidad de Chile. He gained professional experience during a loan spell with Universidad de Concepción in 2002. His international movement started in 2004 with a move to Swiss side Servette, followed by a stint at Brazilian club Grêmio where he contributed to their Série B success. After a period in Belgium with KAA Gent and a return to Chile with Cobreloa, his performance under coach Jorge Sampaoli at O'Higgins revitalized his professional trajectory, facilitating a transfer to Mexican club América in 2008.

English Football Tenure

In August 2010, Beausejour signed a three-year contract with Birmingham City. His debut was delayed by visa requirements, but he soon became a regular fixture. He contributed to the club's 2011 League Cup victory against Arsenal at Wembley Stadium and gained European competition experience during their Europa League campaign. Following his time at Birmingham, he moved to Wigan Athletic, where he secured an FA Cup title before eventually returning to his home country to finish his club career at Universidad de Chile.

National Team Contributions

Beausejour debuted for the Chile national team in 2004. Over the course of his international tenure, which saw him reach 100 appearances by 2018, he became a critical member of the squads that won the Copa América in 2015 and 2016. His legacy with the national side is anchored by his goal-scoring efforts in the 2010 and 2014 World Cup finals, a unique feat for a Chilean representative in the tournament.

Personal Background and Community Recognition

The son of an Afro-Haitian father and a mother of Mapuche descent, Beausejour identifies closely with his indigenous heritage. During his upbringing in Santiago, he attended several local schools. In 2010, the local council named him an Hijo Ilustre of his community, and a sports center was later named in his honor. Outside of sports, he pursued studies in kinesiology at the University of the Americas, though he did not complete the degree.
