Early Development and Junior Categories
Alesi developed his interest in mechanics at his father's automotive repair garage in Avignon. He began karting at age sixteen and transitioned to car racing in 1983 by competing in the French Renault 5 Turbo championship. Success followed in the junior formulae, where he secured the French Formula Three Championship in 1987. By 1989, he claimed the International Formula 3000 title after a season-long battle with Érik Comas.

His entry into Formula One occurred during the 1989 French Grand Prix, where he replaced Michele Alboreto at Tyrrell. He immediately demonstrated capability by finishing fourth. During the 1990 season, Alesi served as the team's lead driver, notably leading the United States Grand Prix at Phoenix for 25 laps. He also achieved a podium finish at the Monaco Grand Prix before moving to Ferrari for the 1991 season.
Ferrari and Subsequent Tenures
Alesi spent five seasons with Ferrari, scoring multiple podiums and securing his only Formula One victory at the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix. In 1996, he joined Benetton, where he earned thirteen podium finishes over two years. His career later included stints with Sauber and the Prost team. He concluded his Formula One participation in 2001 after driving for Jordan, having started his final races in Hungary.
Post-Formula One Racing and Retirement
Following his exit from Grand Prix racing, Alesi competed full-time in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters from 2002 to 2006, recording several race victories. He expanded his activities to endurance and exhibition events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2010 and the Indianapolis 500 in 2012. He officially retired from competitive motor racing in 2012 and transitioned into a role as an ambassador for Pirelli in 2013.
