Jaromír Jágr, born in 1972 in Kladno, Czechoslovakia, is a professional ice hockey player who has maintained the longest playing career in the history of the sport, spanning over 37 professional seasons and 2,000 games. Throughout his career, he has represented his country as a member of the Triple Gold Club, winning Stanley Cups, World Championships, and an Olympic gold medal.
Early Career and Pittsburgh Tenure
Jágr began skating at age three and was playing top-level competition for Poldi SONP Kladno by age 15. In 1990, he became the first Czechoslovak player to be drafted into the NHL without defecting, joining the Pittsburgh Penguins as the fifth overall pick. He was a member of the teams that secured back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 1991 and 1992. During his time in Pittsburgh, he became a central offensive force, recording over 1,000 points and serving as team captain from 1998 to 2001.

After departing Pittsburgh in 2001, Jágr played for numerous franchises, including the Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers, and Calgary Flames. He holds the record as the most productive European-born player in NHL history. His individual achievements include the Hart Memorial Trophy in 1999 and the Lester B. Pearson Award. Beyond the NHL, he played in the Kontinental Hockey League for Avangard Omsk. He currently owns the Czech Extraliga team Rytíři Kladno.
International Representation and Legacy
Jágr’s international career includes appearances at the 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014 Winter Olympics. He secured Olympic gold in 1998 and World Championship titles in 2005 and 2010. His contributions to the sport have been recognized with his inclusion in the Czech Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008 and the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2024. The Pittsburgh Penguins retired his No. 68 jersey in 2024.
