The National Theatre in Cluj-Napoca, constructed between 1904 and 1906, stands as one of the primary works executed by Hungarian architect János Spáda. Born in 1877 in Cojocna, Spáda built a professional career in Kolozsvár, contributing significantly to the architectural landscape of the region before his premature death at the age of 36.
Architectural Practice
Operating an office on the main square of Kolozsvár at the dawn of the 20th century, Spáda managed a wide array of building projects. His output included residential and public commissions. He designed and constructed a two-storey rental property for his own use, known as the Spáda-palace. Additionally, he developed multiple residential houses on Erzsébet Street, including a private family residence at number 51.

Spáda frequently acted as the executing architect for designs created by other professionals. In addition to the National Theatre, he oversaw the implementation of the Marianum in 1911, designed by Jenő Hübner. His portfolio also included work on the Monostor Reformed Church, based on plans by Károly Kós, and the Roman Catholic High-school located in Székelyudvarhely.
Civic Engagement and Death
Beyond his architectural practice, Spáda held several positions within the municipal structure of Kolozsvár. He served on the municipal committee and held memberships in the Chamber of Commerce, the Industry Board, and the Caucus of the Roman Catholic Parish. He also presided over the Artisan's Guild. Spáda died in 1913 due to a lung infection, leaving behind three children. His associate, Mihály Rátz, completed several of his unfinished projects following his passing.
