Jan Svatopluk Presl: The Man Who Gave Czech Its Science
Open a Czech chemistry textbook today and you will find vodík for hydrogen, kyslík for oxygen, uhlík for carbon, dusík for nitrogen, křemík for silicon — words that sound as native to the language as bread or water. All of them were coined, in the 1820s and 1830s, by one Prague professor working largely alone, at a moment when Czech had no scientific vocabulary at all and the empire that ruled Bohemia conducted its learning almost entirely in German and Latin.
A Bohemian Education
Jan Svatopluk Presl was born in Prague on September 4, 1791, and studied at Charles University, the city's centuries-old seat of learning. He came of age during the early stirrings of the Czech National Revival, the movement to restore Czech as a language capable of carrying modern literature, scholarship and science after generations in which German had dominated public and academic life in Bohemia. Presl chose an unusual way to serve that cause: rather than writing history or poetry, he set out to make Czech a working language for chemistry, botany, mineralogy and zoology — disciplines that, in the early nineteenth century, simply had no vocabulary of their own in the language.
Building a Chemical Vocabulary From Nothing
Presl's central and most durable achievement was the invention of Czech chemical nomenclature, laid out across two major texts, Lučba čili chemie zkusná (1828–1835) and Nerostopis čili Mineralogia (1837). Working essentially single-handedly, he devised Czech names for most of the chemical elements known in his time and built a systematic grammar for describing chemical compounds in the language — an achievement with no real precedent to draw on, since Czech scientific prose barely existed before him. His system treated the electronegative component of a compound as a noun and the electropositive component as an adjective, with five original suffixes — -ný, -natý, -itý, -ový and -elý — marking different valence states, and a separate -an suffix for naming salts. It was, in effect, an entire logical architecture for talking about chemistry in Czech, built from scratch by one person. Ten of his element names remain in standard use in Czech to this day, a remarkable survival rate for coinages nearly two centuries old; twentieth-century reforms eventually replaced much of the surrounding system, but Presl's foundational vocabulary proved sturdier than the framework he built around it.
The Nerostopis: A Crystallography Textbook in Czech
Nerostopis čili Mineralogia (1837) was more than a linguistic exercise — it was a genuine scientific textbook, a two-part work combining a descriptive text with an atlas of forty-one engraved plates showing 1,677 individual crystal drawings, illustrated by W. Merklas. The text covered crystallographic and mineralogical fundamentals, including the physical and chemical properties of minerals, followed by extensively referenced descriptive mineralogy. Presl's crystallographic work built directly on the research of the field's founding figures — René Just Haüy, Friedrich Mohs and Carl Friedrich Naumann — and produced original crystal forms of his own. Later assessments of the field have called it a valuable textbook of crystallography in its own right, not merely a translation exercise, with its atlas of plates standing as a significant educational resource independent of the terminology question.
Botany in the Family Business
Presl's other major front was botany, pursued in close partnership with his younger brother, Karel Bořivoj Presl (Carl Borivoj Presl, 1794–1852), himself a noted botanist. In 1819 the brothers jointly published Flora čechica, a work that became the foundation of Czech botanical nomenclature — the counterpart, in plant naming, to what Jan would later do for chemistry. Where Karel wrote primarily in German and Latin, Jan wrote in Czech, and it was his branch of the partnership that pushed botanical terminology into the vernacular. The following year, working instead with the naturalist Friedrich von Berchtold, Presl published O přirozenosti rostlin (On the Nature of Plants, 1820), a Czech-language botanical text covering plant life, terminology, classification, distribution and horticultural practice. An expanded three-volume edition, O přirozenosti rostlin aneb Rostlinář, followed between 1821 and 1835, deliberately pitched at a broad practical readership of physicians, farmers, merchants, artists, craftspeople and educators — a sign that Presl saw his terminology-building project not as an academic exercise but as public infrastructure, meant to let ordinary Czech-speaking professionals read and think about nature in their own language. The brothers also co-edited a botanical exsiccata series, Vegetabilia cryptogamica Boëmiae collecta a Joanne et Carolo Presl, distributing pressed specimens of Bohemian cryptogams under both their names.
Death and Recognition
Presl died in Prague on April 6, 1849, at fifty-seven, having spent essentially his entire working life inside the city where he was born, at the university where he studied. His name lives on in the standard botanical author abbreviation "J.Presl," still appended to species he formally described. In 1914 the Czech Botanical Society named its principal scientific journal Preslia in honor of both brothers jointly, an institutional tribute that has outlasted the empire in which the two men worked to build a modern Czech science from the ground up.
Why Jan Is Called a Genius
Presl's case rests on a specific and unusual kind of intellectual labor: not a single discovery, but the construction of an entire technical language, largely by one mind, across four sciences at once. Inventing workable, internally consistent scientific terminology is a different cognitive task from doing the science itself — it demands systematic linguistic imagination, the ability to hold a whole field's logical structure in view while choosing word-roots and suffixes that will bear the weight of decades of future use. That ten of Presl's element names are still the words Czech schoolchildren learn today, nearly two hundred years on, is the plainest evidence that he got the underlying structure right, not just the aesthetics. The honest counter-case is that Presl was not primarily a discoverer: his mineralogical and botanical texts were largely synthetic works, built on the prior research of Haüy, Mohs, Naumann and his own brother, and his originality lay in packaging and naming rather than in new natural-historical findings. He is, in that sense, closer to a great systematizer and language-builder than to a scientist who reshaped what was known about the physical world — but the systematizing itself, done in a language that had no precedent to lean on, was a feat few of his contemporaries anywhere in Europe were attempting.
Legacy
Presl's element names remain embedded in everyday Czech scientific speech, arguably his most quietly persistent achievement — most Czech speakers who use vodík or kyslík have no idea a single nineteenth-century professor invented the word. Preslia, the journal bearing his and his brother's name, continues Czech botanical publishing into the present, and his Nerostopis atlas survives as a record of what a purely local, vernacular scientific culture could produce even under an empire that gave it little institutional support.
