Early Development and Saw
Wan attended Lake Tuggeranong College in Canberra before moving to Melbourne to study at RMIT University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in media in 1999. In the early 2000s, he and Leigh Whannell wrote a screenplay derived from their personal fears. They filmed a short excerpt to pitch the concept to studios. The resulting feature, Saw (2004), was produced on a modest budget and earned over $103 million worldwide. Neither project met critical approval, with Dead Silence grossing $22 million and Death Sentence earning $17 million. Wan subsequently took a brief hiatus from feature directing to write and pursue other creative opportunities, including a trailer for the video game Dead Space.
Resurgence and Franchise Expansion
Wan returned to prominence with the 2010 independent horror film Insidious, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Seeking greater creative control, he followed this with The Conjuring (2013), initiating a multi-film franchise.
