James Dashner

James Dashner entered the literary landscape in 2003 with the debut of A Door in the Woods, a fantasy novel that launched The Jimmy Fincher Saga. A graduate of Brigham Young University with a master's degree in accounting, he transitioned from a professional background into a career centered on children's and young adult science fiction literature.

Early Career and Series Development

After the completion of his initial four-book saga in 2005, Dashner began working on two distinct narrative projects. The first was The 13th Reality, which commenced in 2008 with The Journal of Curious Letters. This work garnered a Whitney Award and earned recognition as a Borders Original Voices pick. Simultaneously, he developed the concept for what became his most significant commercial success, The Maze Runner series.

Success of The Maze Runner

The inaugural volume of The Maze Runner was published in 2009. The series achieved prolonged prominence on the New York Times Best Seller list for children's books. By 2014, a film adaptation was released, initiating a cinematic trilogy that concluded in 2018. These films generated an estimated $949 million in collective worldwide box-office revenue, ranking the series as the fourth-highest-grossing film adaptation of young-adult literature.

Professional Challenges and Later Work

In 2018, Dashner faced public scrutiny following allegations of sexual harassment, leading to the termination of his relationships with his agent and publisher. He issued a statement expressing intent to seek guidance regarding his conduct. In October 2021, he returned to the literary market with the adult horror novel The House of Tongues, published through Riverdale Avenue Books. This title explores themes of childhood trauma and parental challenges.
