Caan began his professional acting journey in off-Broadway productions and made his Broadway debut in 1961. His early television work included guest appearances on programs such as Naked City, Dr. Kildare, and The Untouchables. His film debut occurred in the 1963 picture Irma la Douce, followed by a significant turn in the 1964 thriller Lady in a Cage.
The Godfather and Cinematic Success
In 1971, Caan gained significant acclaim for his portrayal of Brian Piccolo in the television movie Brian's Song, receiving an Emmy nomination. The following year, he portrayed Sonny Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, earning both Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. This role cemented his status in Hollywood, and he later received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1978.
Later Roles and Return to Acting
Following a five-year hiatus from the film industry, Caan returned in the late 1980s to star in projects including Alien Nation and Misery. His career continued through the early 2000s with appearances in films like Elf and Get Smart. Caan died in 2022 in Westwood and was buried at Eden Memorial Park.
