Jakob Stix

The doctoral thesis completed in 2002 at the University of Bonn by Jakob Stix earned recognition as the best dissertation of that year from the institution's Mathematical Institute. This early academic achievement set the foundation for a career focused on arithmetic algebraic geometry, with specific expertise in anabelian geometry and the study of étale fundamental groups.

Academic Formation

Born in 1974, Stix pursued his mathematical training in Freiburg and Bonn. Under the supervision of Florian Pop, he finished his doctorate in 2002, submitting a dissertation titled Projective Anabelian Curves in Positive Characteristic and Descent Theory for Log-Etale Covers. Following his graduate studies, he served as a post-doctoral student at the Institute for Advanced Study.

Research and Habilitation

In 2008, Stix assumed the role of junior research group leader at the Mathematics Center of the University of Heidelberg. He achieved his habilitation there in 2011, presenting his research under the title Evidence for the section conjecture in the theory of arithmetic fundamental groups. This work was later published in 2013 as part of the Lecture Notes in Mathematics series by Springer.

Professional Appointments and Publications

Stix currently serves as a professor at the Goethe University Frankfurt. His publication history includes significant contributions to journals such as Inventiones mathematicae, where he published on the birational section conjecture with local conditions in 2015. Additionally, his collaboration with Alexander Schmidt produced the article Anabelian geometry with étale homotopy types, which appeared in the Annals of Mathematics in 2016. He also contributed to the field as a publisher for The Arithmetic of Fundamental Groups: PIA 2010.
