His theatrical output included work for the Groupe Octobre, an agitprop company supporting the Popular Front. This political alignment continued throughout his life; in 1971, he publicly supported Angela Davis following her arrest.
Cinematic collaboration
Working extensively with director Marcel Carné, he provided scripts for significant works including Bizarre, Bizarre, Port of Shadows, Daybreak, and The Night Visitors. The 1945 film Les Enfants du Paradis earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He also maintained a lasting partnership with animator Paul Grimault, contributing to numerous projects such as The Little Soldier and the posthumously released The King and the Mockingbird.
