Jaan Tallinn, born in Tallinn in 1972, played a central role in the architecture behind Skype. A graduate of the University of Tartu with a degree in theoretical physics, his career has transitioned from early software development in Estonia to a global focus on artificial intelligence safety and the mitigation of existential risks.
Early Development and Software Ventures
Tallinn began his professional trajectory alongside Ahti Heinla and Priit Kasesalu by founding Bluemoon. Their creation, Kosmonaut, was the first Estonian game sold internationally in 1989. Following a commercial setback with the Everyday.com project for Tele2, Tallinn pivoted to developing P2P technologies. Working for Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, he created FastTrack and Kazaa, the foundations upon which Skype was built around 2003. He exited his position at Skype when the company was acquired by eBay in 2005.

As an investor, Tallinn has targeted the technology and AI sectors. He provided early capital for DeepMind, which was later purchased by Google, and invested in the reversible debugging software firm Undo. His portfolio also includes the British startup Faculty and the California-based autonomous negotiation company Pactum. Additionally, he co-founded the medical research company MetaMed. Public records indicate he once provided a $100 million loan to Sam Bankman-Fried, which was recalled by 2018.
Advocacy for AI Safety and Existential Risk
Tallinn maintains a significant focus on existential threats, particularly those emerging from artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, and nanotechnology. He co-founded the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge and the Future of Life Institute. He is a prominent donor to the Machine Intelligence Research Institute and the Pragmatist Foundation. In 2023 and 2025, he signed multiple open letters calling for pauses on powerful AI training and the development of superintelligence, citing concerns over alignment risks.
