He subsequently relocated to Philadelphia to complete an apprenticeship under a carriage-maker. His period of travel continued to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he married, and later to Cincinnati, Ohio. In that city, he spent two years working as a steward on a river steamer before establishing his own business interests.
