Ivo Prokopiev

Bulgarian businessman

July 10, 1971 marks the birth of Ivo Prokopiev in Razgrad, Bulgaria. Educated at the University of National and World Economy in Sofia with an additional Executive MBA from INSEAD, he established himself as a central figure in Bulgarian finance and media through his founding of Alfa Finance Holding and his co-ownership of the Economedia publishing group.

Early Business Ventures

Prokopiev co-founded Alfa Finance Holding AD in 1999, serving as its Chairman for over 15 years. The group functioned as a regional investment entity, managing a portfolio that spanned industrial minerals, banking, clean energy, and telecommunications. Notable subsidiaries included Kaolin AD, which became a regional leader before its sale to Germany's Quarzwerke, and Spectrum Net, which was later acquired by Telekom Austria. At its peak, the firm employed more than 3,400 people.

Media Ownership and Independent Journalism

In 1993, Prokopiev and Philip Harmandzhiev co-founded Economedia. The publishing group maintains the weekly newspaper Capital and the daily outlet Dnevnik, which was launched in 2001. These publications are recognized for their commitment to investigative reporting, specifically concerning the collapse of the Corporate Commercial Bank in 2014 and the business activities of Delyan Peevski. Economedia platforms reach more than 1.5 million readers monthly.

Clean Energy Transition

Since 2018, Prokopiev has concentrated his professional efforts on the Vienna-based investment platform Renalfa Solarpro Group GmbH. The platform specializes in clean energy and e-mobility, managing a portfolio that includes over 12 GW of wind, solar, and battery storage projects. The company conducts operations through various subsidiaries across numerous countries, positioning itself as a major renewable energy investor in Central and Eastern Europe.

Public Service and Legal Challenges

Prokopiev served as the first Chairman of the Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria between 2006 and 2010. He also functioned as the Honorary Consul of Canada in Bulgaria from 2010 to 2019. The court acquitted him on June 29, 2020, with Judge Velislava Angelova describing the prosecution's financial damage claims as a mathematical absurdity.
