Croatian handball player

Ivano Balić, born in 1979 in Split, Croatia, established himself as a central figure in international handball. His transition from basketball to handball in 1995 redirected a career that would span top-tier leagues across Croatia, Spain, and Germany. He secured significant international honors, including world championship titles and Olympic gold, while earning global recognition for his on-court performance.

Transition to Handball

Born to handball players Stjepanka and Žarko Balić, he spent his early childhood in Italy before returning to Split. He initially pursued basketball with KK Split, a club with a history of European championship success. In 1995, his father's acquaintance, Mate Bokan, persuaded him to shift his focus to handball. This decision began his journey into professional sports within the Croatian league system.

Professional Club Trajectory

Balić started his senior tenure at RK Brodomerkur Split in 1997. By 2001, he transferred to RK Metković Jambo, where he secured a domestic cup victory and a league championship. His international reputation grew significantly after moving to the Spanish club Portland San Antonio in 2004, where he played alongside Jackson Richardson. His later career included stints with RK CO Zagreb, where he earned multiple domestic titles, and the Spanish side Atlético Madrid, with whom he won the IHF Super Globe and the Copa del Rey. He concluded his professional path with the German team HSG Wetzlar, retiring after a final match against Göppingen in June 2015.

International Honors and Recognition

His national team debut occurred at the 2001 Mediterranean Games in Tunisia. He became a fundamental component of the squad that captured the 2003 World Championship in Portugal and the 2004 Olympic gold medal. His consistency earned him the IHF World Player of the Year award in both 2003 and 2006. In 2010, the International Handball Federation recognized him as the best player in history through an online poll, and he was subsequently inducted into the European Handball Hall of Fame in 2023.
