Born in 1884 in İzmir, İsmet İnönü served as a central figure in the foundation and consolidation of the Republic of Turkey. As a high-ranking military officer and skilled diplomat, he played a crucial role in international negotiations following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, eventually holding the office of Prime Minister across multiple terms throughout his career.
Military and Diplomatic Rise
Graduating from the Ottoman Military Academy, İnönü rose through the ranks as a general and military officer. During the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922, he commanded forces in the First and Second Battles of İnönü, events which later provided the inspiration for his official surname. As Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1922 to 1924, he led the Turkish delegation at the Lausanne Conferences, successfully negotiating the Treaty of Lausanne to replace the earlier Treaty of Sèvres.
