Background and Academic Qualifications
Born in 1980 in the village of Leonora, Ali is the son of two educators. His ancestral roots trace back to India, as his great-great-great grandparents migrated to British Guiana in 1894. He attended St. Stanislaus College in Georgetown for his secondary education. His academic credentials include a doctorate in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of the West Indies, along with several degrees from institutions including Anglia Ruskin University, the University of Salford, and the University of Sunderland.

Ali entered the National Assembly in 2006. Under the administration of Donald Ramotar, he held the portfolios for Housing and Water, and later Tourism, Industry, and Commerce. During these years, he occasionally performed presidential and prime ministerial functions. After the People's Progressive Party/Civic shifted to opposition in 2015, Ali took on roles as chair of the Public Accounts Committee and co-chair of the Economic Services Committee.
The 2020 Election and Legal Hurdles
Selected as the presidential candidate for the PPP/C in January 2019, Ali faced significant legal setbacks during his campaign. He was charged with 19 counts of conspiracy and fraud involving the alleged sale of state lands in Plantation Sparendaam and Goedverwagting. He maintained that the accusations were politically motivated. These charges were dismissed by the courts on 14 August 2020. His campaign centered on economic recovery, promising 50,000 new jobs and transparency in the management of the nation's nascent oil sector.
International Relations and Second Term
As president, Ali has navigated complex regional security issues. In 2020, he coordinated with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to initiate maritime patrols to support border security near Venezuela. In April 2024, he publicly characterized the military actions in the Gaza Strip as genocide. His governance record led to his re-election for a second presidential term following the general election on 1 September 2025.
