Ion Antonescu served as Prime Minister of Romania from 1940 until 1944, presiding over a wartime dictatorship known as the National Legionary State. A career military officer trained at the École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr, he navigated the collapse of monarchical authority to become the nation's Conducător during the height of the Second World War.
Military Progression
Born in Pitești in 1882, Antonescu established his reputation within the Romanian Army long before his ascent to supreme political power. His early career included service as a military attaché to France and pivotal roles as Chief of the Romanian General Staff between 1933 and 1934. His tactical experience grew through his involvement in the 1907 peasants' revolt and the Romanian campaign during the First World War.

Antonescu rose to prominence during the political crisis of 1940, eventually ousting King Carol II. He formed an alliance with Horia Sima of the Iron Guard, though this partnership fractured during the 1941 Legionary Rebellion. Following this conflict, Antonescu consolidated control by assuming the roles of Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Defence Minister, effectively operating as the head of a singular, authoritarian regime.
Wartime Policy and the Holocaust
Under his leadership, Romania joined the Axis powers in Operation Barbarossa to recover territories lost to the Soviet Union, including Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina. His administration implemented systematic policies of ethnic cleansing and deportation that resulted in the deaths of approximately 400,000 Jews and Romani. These actions involved massacres in regions such as Odessa and forced transfers to Transnistria, though his regime notably declined to implement the finality of the Nazi Final Solution.
Downfall and Execution
The tide of the war turned against Romania as Allied aerial bombardments increased and losses mounted on the Eastern Front. In an attempt to mitigate defeat, Antonescu initiated peace negotiations with the Allies. These efforts were halted on 23 August 1944, when King Michael I led a coup d'état that resulted in the dictator's arrest. Following a trial for war crimes, he was executed in Jilava in 1946.
