Ian McElhinney

Northern Irish actor and director

Thirty years of age marked the professional acting debut of Ian McElhinney, who first appeared on stage as Bill Sikes in a production of Oliver!. Since that initial role, he has sustained a career spanning over four decades, establishing himself as a versatile performer across television series and theatre productions throughout the United Kingdom.

Early Career and Education

Born on 30 June 1948 in Belfast, McElhinney is the son of a Church of Ireland clergyman and teacher. He pursued studies in international affairs at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. Before transitioning into his professional acting career, he spent several years employed as a teacher at Goole Grammar School, now known as Goole Academy, located in Yorkshire, England.

Television and Screen Performance

McElhinney has contributed to numerous television programs during his career. His screen credits include appearances in Taggart, Hornblower, Cold Feet, and The Tudors. Contemporary audiences recognize him for specific roles, including Barristan Selmy in Game of Thrones, Morgan Monroe in The Fall, and Granda Joe in the series Derry Girls.

Directing and Personal Life

Beyond his work as an actor, he functions as a director and has received a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play. In his private life, he is married to the playwright and actress Marie Jones. The couple established Rathmore Productions Ltd in 2009. They reside in Belfast and have three sons.
