Hugo Almeida began his senior professional career at Porto in 2003, marking his Primeira Liga debut against Benfica. Over the following two decades, the Portuguese centre-forward transitioned through multiple European leagues, establishing a notable scoring record in Germany and Turkey before eventually moving into management in 2024 with roles in Iran and Turkey.
Early Development and Porto
A native of Figueira da Foz, Almeida began his youth career with Naval 1º de Maio before signing with Porto. His initial stint included loan spells at União de Leiria and Boavista. Upon his return to Porto for the 2005–06 season, he contributed to a championship-winning squad, scoring a 35-metre free kick against Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League.

Almeida joined Werder Bremen in 2006, initially on loan before completing a permanent move in 2007 for €4 million. He became a fixture in the attack following the departure of Miroslav Klose, scoring 16 goals during the 2007–08 campaign. Over four seasons, he recorded 63 competitive goals, contributed to the 2009 DFB-Pokal victory, and helped the team reach the 2009 UEFA Cup final.
Turkish Tenure and Later Years
In December 2010, Almeida signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Beşiktaş for €2 million. He scored 47 goals in 109 appearances and won the 2011 Turkish Cup. His career path later included stints at Cesena, Kuban Krasnodar, Anzhi Makhachkala, Hannover 96, AEK Athens, Hajduk Split, and a final return to Portugal with Académica de Coimbra before his 2020 retirement.
International Competition
Almeida represented Portugal across all youth levels and earned 57 senior caps, scoring 19 goals. He became a regular starter following the departures of Pauleta and Liédson. His tournament experience included appearances at two World Cups and two European Championships, as well as the 2004 Summer Olympics.
