He achieved recognition for his biography of Giuseppe Peano, the Italian mathematician responsible for the Formulario mathematico. Kennedy’s public commitment to gay rights began in Rhode Island, where he became a visible figure on campus and in the local community. He chose to come out publicly on the cover of The Cowl. On June 26, 1976, he joined Eric Gordon to participate in the inaugural Gay Pride parade in Providence. Following his relocation to San Francisco in 1986, he deepened his focus on the history of homosexual emancipation in Germany.
Historical Writing and Literary Canon
His scholarship includes a biography of the German jurist Karl Heinrich Ulrichs and the editorship of Ulrichs’ collected writings. He also extensively researched the German anarchist writer John Henry Mackay, translating Mackay's boy-love novels to solidify his position within the gay literary canon. His other notable historical publications include studies on the journal Der Eigene and the history of Der Kreis. In 2014, he married his longtime partner, Don Endy.
